HUNTINGBURG — The Garden Gate Jazz, Wine & Craft Beer Festival on Saturday in Huntingburg will celebrate diversity with music from The Mike Tracy Brazilian Ensemble from Louisville and the Wade Baker Jazz Collaboration from Cincinnati, Ohio.

The free festival opens its gates at 4:30 p.m., with the music beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The University of Louisville’s Tracy is one of America’s foremost jazz educators, with more than 37 years of performing and teaching experience. In classrooms, studios and concert halls, he has developed a variety of innovative approaches to jazz education, enabling him to work with students of any proficiency. As director of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program at U of L, Tracy has also made forays into the worlds of recording, publishing and arranging. He has five CDs to his credit. His Brazilian jazz ensemble is made up of Tracy on saxophone, Pat Lentz on guitar, Pablo Souza on acoustic and electric bass and Lourenço Vasconcellos and Bruno “Gafanhoto” Souza on drums and percussion.

Baker is a graduate of Jasper High school and has played at numerous jazz festivals, including the International Blues Challenge, the Bean Blossom and Cincinnati blues festivals and the U of L, University of Indianapolis, Butler, Ball State and Indiana State jazz festivals. Baker was nominated for the 2009 Cincy Groove Magazine Artist of the Year as well as the 2009 Cincinnati Entertainment Award in the jazz category. He also won the Cincy Groove Artist of the Month Award for April 2009. The Wade Baker Jazz Collaboration was formed in October 2009 as a means to start a new revolution in the jazz scene of Cincinnati and abroad. It is the group’s goal to play an eclectic fusion of jazz, hip-hop, funk and groove music while keeping the integrity and spirit of the traditions of the jazz masters.

The festival will also feature a wine and craft beer garden. Wineries from southern Indiana will provide samples, and bottles will be available for carryout. The beer garden will feature craft beers. The Dubois County Suds Club will also provide samples of home-brew and have a People’s Choice Award home-brew competition.

All activities will take place on the south side of Market Street behind Old Town Hall, 309 N. Geiger St.. The festival is co-sponsored by the Huntingburg Chamber of Commerce and Vincennes University Jasper Campus. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Food concessions will be available.

Getting to play with a symphony is always a treat for a jazz musician, being the featured soloist is a dream. I got to live that dream in March as soloist with the Loja Symphony Orchestra for their first every Jazz and Symphony Concert. I got to play great jazz arrangements for two nights with a full week of rehearsals. Wonderful time, great sound and the people really loved it. How often does one get to play with 30+ stings and harp? Lucky guy! Thanks to Kristina Krit (Russia) and Anderson Pessoa (Brazil) for the wonderful arrangements and the Loja Symphony musicians and maestro Andrei Vasileusky for all their support.
